Today we celebrate the first day of Spring, Dougall being allowed out for walks, and National Wattle Day.
The wattle is the National Flower of Australia and a flowering wattle was introduced into the Coat of Arms in 1912 and was officially declared Australia's National Floral Emblem in 1998. Wattle Days were celebrated at different times around Australia, but in 1992 that National Wattle Day was set as the 1st of September. The Queensland Wattle Day League was formed in 1912 and is known today as Open Minds. It is a community organisation which provides support for people with mental illness.
The lovely wattle has been celebrated by many Australian painters. This is one painting by Vida Lahey and was published in QAGOMA's blog.
It reminds me of the the celebration of Oranges in Famagusta and how we used to watch the parades and floats made with oranges and citrus fruit. I am heading to the Mount Coot- Ha Botanic Gardens for more.
A lot of Brisbane's bridges will be flooded in yellow to celebrate National Wattle Day.
Happy Spring Everyone.
